Best Trail Running Gaiters 2026 Ankle Height

How To Choose The Best Ankle Gaiters For Trail Running and Hiking
As the dust settles after millions of miles, a clear recipe for the best trail running gaiters has emerged; what we call the Dirty Girl archetype. Emblematic of PCT thru-hikers and frequently available in wacky prints, these gaiters feature a lightweight breathable fabric, low cut, Velcro rear attachment, reinforced metal hook front, and cannot be taken on/off without first removing shoes.
Gaiters offer a big advantage! Keeping debris out of your shoes eliminates the need to periodically stop and empty sand, pebbles, and snow out. They keep your feet and socks cleaner and more hygienic. And fun prints can really make a statement.
Gaiters have also have drawbacks! They build heat and increase foot sweat by blocking airflow around your shoe’s collar, and by adding an extra layers of fabric over your socks. They are one more piece of gear to fuss over, and increase the amount of weight on your foot by ~5%.

Reviewing Ankle Gaiters
Altra Trail Running Gaiters
To pair with my trail shoe of choice, Altra Experience Wild, I prefer Altra’s own trail running gaiters. At base level, they check all of the boxes: simple design; lightweight fabric; low cut; strapless; Velcro back; reinforced front with metal hook. What differentiates them from similar models is the double-sided Velcro back connector, which doubles the strength of the hold when connected to the GaiterTrap™ built into every pair of Altras. We wish they came in more colors and sizes, but gaiter fit isn’t that particular, and it’s not a major drawback. If you wear Altra shoes, I recommend running and hiking in Altra’s gaiters.
- Price: $25
- Weight: 1.2 oz
- Back Attach: Double-sided Velcro
- Front Attach: Metal hook
- On/Off Over Shoe: No
- Pros: Extra secure hold on back. Available in light colors. Comes with Velcro strip for non-altras. Reinforced front.
- Cons: Exposed Velcro on heel if used with non-Altras. Only two sizes.
Dirty Girl Trail Running Gaiters
Dirty Girl is the original ultra marathon gaiter, keeping debris out of endurance athletes’ shoes while making a statement with fun print patterns since 2004. This design popularized the strapless trail running shoe gaiter archetype as we know it today; copied many times over, but never surpassed. Renown for surviving multiple thru hikes, Dirty Girl Gaiters are exceptionally durable thanks to burly stiches at every seam, a reinforced front section, and decades of refinement. This is the gaiter we recommend most highly overall, and what we would choose for any shoe except for Altras.
- Price: $23
- Weight: 1.1 oz
- Back Attach: Velcro
- Front Attach: Metal Hook
- On/Off Over Shoe: No
- Pros: Available in light colors, tons of fun prints. Reinforced front. Most proven on PCT. Best metal hook. Comes with Velcro strip. All stitching is reinforced. Six sizes.
- Cons: None.
KAHTOOLA INSTAgaiter SL Hiking Gaiters
The option to put ankle gaiters on over your shoes, or take them off without removing shoes, usually isn’t necessary. But it’s certainly nice to have! If you envision taking your gaiters on/off multiple times throughout a long day, KAHTOOLA INSTAgaiter SL are the ones to do it with! This is a low top, minimalist trail running and hiking gaiter than connects to the heel with Velcro and front with a hook, as per usual. But unlike the Dirty Girl archetype, a vertically aligned, toothed zipper bisects the body of the gaiter allowing for easy on/off. As far as other features, we like the drawcord top cinch to help get a perfect seal, but wish the front hook was metal and had fabric that was reinforcement. Notably, these also come with double sided Velcro and work great with Altras.
- Price: $35
- Weight: 1.3 oz
- Back Attach: Velcro
- Front Attach: Plastic Hook
- On/Off Over Shoe: Yes
- Pros: Best over-shoe option. Toothed zipper. Top cinch drawcord. Comes with Velcro strip. Altra gaiter trap compatible. Best version of plastic hook.
- Cons: Zipper connection adds extra step. Plastic hook inferior to metal. Front hook not reinforced. Zipper adds weight, structural bulk, failure point. Exposed Velcro on heel if not used with Altras. Only two sizes.
Ultra Gam Trail Running Gaiters
Ultra Gam makes superb trail running gaiters because they are a direct clone of Dirty Girl in fit, form, function, price, and availability in wacky prints. My test pair had a pattern of Circus Animal cookies with tiny little bow tie; how fun is that!?! The biggest difference compared to Dirty Girl is that their seams aren’t as well reinforced, and they have a slightly different metal hook, which also works great. They’re available at Garage Grown Gear and Etsy.
- Price: $23
- Weight: 1.1 oz
- Back Attach: Velcro
- Front Attach: Metal hook
- On/Off Over Shoe: No
- Pros: Available in light colors, tons of fun prints. Reinforced front. Best metal hook. Comes with Velcro strip. Good size range. Available at GGG.
- Cons: Front center stitching is not reinforced. Copied Dirty Girl design and aesthetic.
Trado Trail Gaiters
New-to-market Trado launched their signature Trail Gaiters in 2026, and I was immediately impressed by the design. The delineation between its top and bottom half creates a much better fitting wrap around the ankle, that also sits more flush on top of your shoe. The fabric is another huge plus; it’s the comfiest and most breathable I’ve worn. And of course, the fact that it comes with super glue is also a really nice touch, ensuring a longer lasting heel attachment than peel off adhesive strips. This is a really high quality product, but not quite perfect. The front attachment zone is not reinforced with pack cloth like Dirty Girl, and the blunt tipped plastic hook was difficult to connect to the forward laces of my preferred trail shoe, Altra Experience Wild 3+. Lastly, while the fabric is more breathable than others, some of that benefit is lost because the top half is double layered.
- Price: $29
- Weight: 1.0 oz
- Back Attach: Velcro
- Front Attach: Plastic hook
- On/Off Over Shoe: No
- Pros: Best-in-class fabric is stretchy, lightweight, and the most breathable. Comes with Velcro strip and super glue. Superior ankle fit with delineation between top and bottom half.
- Cons: Plastic hook hardware. Non-reinforced front area. Top half has two layers of fabric, half the breathability.
Wapiti Designs Go-Long Ankle Gaiters
Wapiti is another Dirty Girl clone, complete with an array of wacky prints, differentiated and notable only because they’re the best trail running gaiters available on Amazon Prime. Beyond that, it’s the same strapless ankle gaiters design with Velcro back and reinforced metal hook front. A couple of drawbacks (compared to Dirty Girl) are that there are only two sizes instead of six, and most of the colorways are dark (this absorbs more heat in sunlight).
- Price: $25
- Weight: 1.2 oz
- Back Attach: Velcro
- Front Attach: Metal Hook
- On/Off Over Shoe: No
- Pros: On Amazon Prime. Available in fun prints. Reinforced front. Best metal hook. Comes with Velcro strip.
- Cons: Copied Dirty Girl design and aesthetic. Only two sizes. Limited light color options.
Black Diamond Distance Ultralight Gaiters
After Altra, Black Diamond Distance UL are the next best running and hiking gaiters from a mainstream brand, complete with metal hook and Velcro back attachment. They also boast the lightest list weight, but only by 0.1 oz / 3 grams. While they are available in four sizes, we’re disappointed by the fact that they only come in black. Black is objectively the worst color because it absorbs the most heat in sunlight and gaiters already make your feet hotter and sweatier. Lastly, there is nothing about them that justifies being twice as expensive as the other Dirty Girl clones.
- Price: $50
- Weight: 1.0 oz
- Back Attach: Velcro
- Front Attach: Metal hook
- On/Off Over Shoe: No
- Pros: Lightest list weight by a fraction of an ounce. Good size range. Reinforced front. Metal hook. Comes with Velcro strip.
- Cons: Overpriced. Only available in black.
Outdoor Research Swift Running Gaiters
Outdoor Research Swift are the third best pair of hiking and trail running ankle gaiters from a mainstream outdoor brand gaiter, because they’re styled after the Dirty Girl archetype. A solid performer that checks all of the boxes, but is neither innovative, nor 100% optimal. Users will enjoy the classic strapless, low cut, Velcro back, hook front, and reinforced stitching. But they may be frustrated by the lack of non-black colorways, inadequately reinforced front connection, and a plastic front hook that is fussy to pull on over some lace configurations.
- Price: $35
- Weight: 1.2 oz
- Back Attach: Velcro
- Front Attach: Plastic hook
- On/Off Over Shoe: No
- Pros: Optimal archetype. Good stitching. Good size range.
- Cons: Curled plastic hook is difficult to hook onto taut laces. Inadequate reinforcement at front. Only available in black. More expensive than others like it.
Kahtoola INSTAgaiter Low/Mid Hiking Gaiters
Underfoot strap gaiters are unnecessary for most people, most of the time. However, snow changes the equation. When you posthole while wearing strapless gaiters, snow pushes up and enters through the sides from below where the seal is weakest. Underfoot strap gaiters solve this issue by locking down the side walls and creating a tight, full surround seal. However, a common problem is that most gaiter straps were designed to be used with boots that have a raised area under the midfoot, shielding the strap from being ground down on repeated contact. Modern trail footwear more typically eschews the external arch, which puts immense abrasion pressure on the strap. Thus they break.
Kahtoola INSTAgaiters are the best version of underfoot strap gaiters because because they have an extremely durable, replaceable, and 1000-mile-warrantied strap. The fabric is lightweight, and can be put on or taken off over your footwear of choice. A drawcord cinch keeps the top held in place. While we would like to see them using a more reinforced front section with a metal hook instead of plastic, they are undeniably the best underfoot strap gaiters, and the best hiking gaiters for snow.
Choose mid height version for a dedicated snow gaiter. Choose low height version for an all-purpose gaiter that’s still good in snow.
- Price: $44 | $54
- Weight: 2.0 | 2.4 oz
- Back Attach: Held by Underfoot Strap
- Front Attach: Plastic Hook
- On/Off Over Shoe: Yes, Zipper
- Pros: Best for snow, reduces ingress when post holing. Best underfoot cord option, very durable, 1000 mile warranty, replaceable. Toothed zipper. Top cinch drawcord. Best version of plastic hook.
- Cons: Overkill for standard trail running/hiking. More steps to put on. Plastic hook inferior to metal, not reinforced. Zipper adds weight, structural bulk, failure point. Only two sizes.
Popular Trail Running & Hiking Gaiters to Avoid and Why
REI Co-op Swiftland: Avoid these because they have an inadequately durable underfoot straps (though you can remove them and use without), annoying plastic front hooks with inadequate fabric reinforcement, and are only available in black.
REI Co-op Flash: Avoid these because they have an inadequately durable underfoot straps that must be used to secure the gaiter because there is no Velcro back attachment. Technically these are marketed as lightweight hiking gaiters, not trail running gaiters, but they’re equally bad either way.
Salomon Trail Low/High: Avoid these because they have an inadequately durable underfoot strap that only works with an externally raised instep arch, lack fabric reinforcement in critical areas (tore when I first put them on), the low versions doesn’t seal well around the ankle, the high version is heavy, and the wrap-around create large non-breathable multi-layered swathes of fabric.
Topo Athletic Performance: Avoid these because the rear attachment only works with Topo shoes. If you wear Topos, you should still avoid them because they’re heavy (relative to the genre), and the wrap-around create large non-breathable multi-layered swathes of fabric.
Conclusion to the Best Hiking & Trail Running Gaiters
Trail running gaiters are an important arrow to have in your quiver. The ability to keep debris out is very valuable, but does come with drawbacks. When shopping ankle gaiters, look for models that are (1) ankle high, (2) strapless, (3) Velcro back, (4) reinforced metal hook front (5) available in non-black (6) cannot be put on/taken off over a shoe. Any gaiters that meets those criteria are a safe bet. Thanks for reading and happy trails!
