Kuiu Tiberon

Kuiu Tiberon ventilated pants are designed for warm weather hunting, and the Japanese AirMatrix fabric is best-in-class. Its micro porous grid pattern works in tandem with standard sized thigh vents to dump heat while on the move. In a sense, all of the fabric is ventilated, not just where the zips open! On top of that, you get better-than-average stretch, articulation of the knee and crotch, UPF 50+ sun protection, and DWR water resistance which also speeds up dry time. They have great zippered cargo pockets, but the hand and back pockets could be deeper. This is one of a select few pairs of vent pants available in women’s sizing, which we love to see. As a weird flaw, we note that the men’s pair comes in odd inseam increments – 31, 34, and 36. Where is the 32?

Not only do they get standard sized exterior thigh vents, but the side entry zips to the front cargo pockets double as inner thigh vents. Having a vent on each side of the thigh significantly boosts airflow, creating a draft effect that moves heat out. That said, using the cargo pocket as a vents opens up the possibility of losing gear when you forget its open, and also creates a weak connection point that could tear.

To achieve this, they are factory-treated with Insect Shield permethrin, and come with a built-in ankle gaiter to completely seal out ticks. The fabric feels burly and highly abrasion resistant, yet exhibits good stretch. The vents are larger than average, and quality of stitching and trim is high across the board. Apart from an eye popping price tag and no women’s fit, the biggest physical drawback is a lack of bonus pockets. In addition to the pair of hand pockets, there is one only back pocket and one drop-in thigh pocket; no zipper/snap closure cargo pockets to be found.

They are notable for having the largest zipper vents of any pair on the market, and a factory-treated coat of Insect Shield permethrin for repellency. Eco Mesh is made with a cool, lightweight, UPF30, woven Duralite Nylon fabric that blocks mosquito bites and holds up against abuse. They have exceptionally deep hand pockets and zippered back pockets, but no cargo pockets. The biggest drawback to this design is the combo of non-stretch fabric with a non-gusseted crotch. This impairs range of motion, though the loose, baggy fit helps compensate.

For the maximum ventilation in warm weather, we recommend Rail Riders Bone Flats. Contrary to nearly every other pair of ventilated pants in this buyer’s guide, Bone Flats have four large mesh panels, spanning the inner and outer length of each leg. This creates cross flow and significantly boosts aeration. On top of that, they utilize an extremely thin fabric that disperses heat build up with ease and dries very qu ickly. However, keep in mind that they cannot be closed off, and thus are strictly for use in warm temps. One other minor knock is that it feels like the vents could be a bit higher up on the leg. As for the features, you get reasonably deep hand pockets, one back zipper pocket, and a comfy loose fit. Biggest drawback is that the lack of stretch limits range of motion, and lack of versatility for cool weather – though that’s not the point with this one.

They differ by gender in that the men’s has a 4-way mechanical stretch nylon fabric, while the women’s introduces elastane for even greater stretch. Both are highly abrasion resistant, but at the cost of reduced aeration. Lastly, we note that the men’s version has medium sized vents, while the women’s vents are small.

The fabric is somewhere in between light and medium weight, reasonably cool when combined with the standard sized vents. We love the envelope style back pockets and large right thigh cargo pocket, but are not impressed by the relatively shallow hand pockets. The built-in webbing belt is divisive. Some will use it. Others will ignore it and opt to use its standard belt loops instead. We opt for the latter.

These lightweight joggers feature a thin-but-tough, ultra quick drying, and slightly stretchy main fabric, with large mesh vent panels along the exterior side of the leg, top of butt, and crotch. They’re light enough to store in a running vestpack, and the short inseam ensures loose cuffs won’t impair your stride. Considering their trim fit, it would be nice if the main fabric had more stretch, but the mesh panels help compensate. A minor pet peeve is the elastic drawstring waistband, which feels a bit unrefined with excess shock cord protruding awkwardly out the front.

Great for cool weather, bushwhacking, and snow, but overkill on heat retention for warm weather. The standard sized thigh vents do immense work to compensate, but the First Lite Trace are better for active use.

Fjallraven Vidda Pro Ventilated Pants

Swedish mainstay Fjallraven makes some of the toughest, most popular, and best looking ventilated pants on the market using their heavyweight cotton-polyester G-1000 fabric. The Vidda Pro feature an array of pockets, including three cargo, one knife, and two hand (but no back). Multiple loops add additional storage, including for a hammer/axe, as well as frontal carabiners. One other thoughtful feature is the stretch crotch gusset panel that drastically increases range of motion. That gusset is critical, because the rest of the fabric has zero stretch. As burly and pleasingly gorp-core as these pants are, the fabric is simply too thick and hot for sustained movement in temps above freezing. Great for hanging around fjords, less so for crushing high mileage days in comfort. Runs pretty trim so size up!

5.11 Straight Fit Peak Cargo

When durability and best-in-class pocket storage is required above all else, consider the 5.11 Straight Fit Peak Cargo. This pair of lightly ventilated pants uses a heavy duty, majority polyester-but-also-cotton fabric blend that would be a great choice for activities like crawling across gravel or walking in thorny brush. But with that durability comes significant heft and heat retention; a poor combination for hiking in warm temps. Not helping much are the 6” long side zipper vents, by far the smallest we tested. While they do contribute positively to airflow (alongside the thin crotch gusset) they do not come close to offsetting the amount of heat build up users may experience with this fabric. All in these would be a good pair for handling specific work-based tasks, but are overbuilt and inadequately ventilated for hiking, hunting, and active outdoor pursuits.

Costing only $30, these pants offer all the same features as premium pairs costing $100 more from the likes of Kuiu, Kuhl, and First Lite. We like the stretchy fabric and elasticized waistband with belt loops. However, you get what you pay for and there are concessions to quality. First and foremost, the zipper vents are extremely narrow and won’t dump heat at the same rate as their peers. We also note the cheaply sewn velcro closures on its cargo and back pockets; they are likely to rip off at some point.
