Send Cottage Manufacturers Some Love this Sale Season
Surprise! Cottage manufacturers are having sales too!
Cottage manufacturers provide a vital service to the hiking and backpacking community. Without them we’d have far, far less choices for excellent gear. In fact, much of the gear listed in this Guide are our STAFF PICKS for the best gear available!
Since the early aughts Cottage Manufacturers have innovated and produced ultralight gear that major manufacturers and retailers are unwilling to deal with. Our outdoor lives are far richer for it. So if you happen to be shopping during this sale period, it’s worth looking at cottage manufacturer sales first before looking at the sales from major retailers.

Enlightened Equipment Enigma Quilt
$290
And similar Revelation Quilt with zippered footbox
STAFF PICK: The Enlightened Enigma Quilts achieved the highest warmth to weight rating for Camping Quilts. As such, we consider this version of their quilt line to be the “gold standard” for camping quilts. In addition, the Enlightened Equipment quilts offer an optional draft color. The regular length version of these quilts (which we used for comparison) are 2 inches shorter than the Premium Burrow, however, for those who need greater length a “long, 78 inch” version is also available (1 inch shorter than the Premium Burrow long) with only about .67 ounces added weight. The Enlightened Equipment website provides a very good sizing chart if you are in doubt about what is best.
SIMILAR MODEL: Also look at the very similar Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt. The major difference is that the Revelation has a zippered footbox which allows it to be opened out into a flat blanket in warmer weather and you might be able to squeeze two people under a wide version.
BEST FOR: Those looking for the highest performance 30F degree camping quilt. Highest warmth to weight rating!

Enlightened Equipment Torrid Apex Jacket
$170-$180
Equally at home on an alpine approach or on a windswept lake, the Torrid APEX Jacket offers warmth, wind protection, and moisture resistance at an ultralight weight. Designed to keep you warm while keeping your pack light, the jacket starts at just 7.75 ounces (220g). Built using 2oz/yd² CLIMASHIELD™ APEX synthetic insulation, the Torrid maintains warmth and breathability even when damp.
The smooth ultralight nylon fabric has a durable water repellent finish for better performance in light precipitation. The elastic waistband and cuffs keep warmth in and cold out. The optional hood adjusts with a shock cord, and a grosgrain zipper garage at the chin increases comfort. Zippered pockets keep the essentials at hand. The Torrid APEX Jacket is slightly oversized to accommodate layers and has raglan sleeves for a full range of movement. For those who won’t let weather get in the way, the Torrid APEX Jacket is the perfect 3-season layer.

Torrid APEX Pants too!
When the temps get really cold, and you are standing around camp on a long, dark winter night nothing beats a pair of warm pants. The Enlightened Equipment Torrid APEX Pants are only 5.5 ounces but oh so warm! Pair them with the Torrid Jacket and the combo weighs only 14 oz about the same as a fleece shirt, or what most folks take for rain jackets BUT the combo blows away the fleece for warmth.
new 2020 Enlightened Equipment Visp Rain Jacket with Pit Zips
$190 ($200 w pit zips)
STAFF PICK: The Enlightened Equipment Visp Rain Jacket is one of the very lightest waterproof breathable rain jackets on the market. It features a super breathable 3-layer custom Toyota fabric (75,000 g/m2/24h) — the highest spec we’ve seen in a rain jacket. New for 2020 is the option to add 12″ pit zips to improve venting and sweat buildup. The combo of high fabric breathability and pit zip venting makes the Visp one of the best at preventing internal humidity buildup (sweat) to keep you dry on the inside. Despite its minimal weight, it has a roomy fit – especially in the upper torso and arms, and will accommodate a warm jacket under it. It has raglan sleeves for full range of motion, rear drop hem for full coverage. Additional features: drawcord adjustable hood with brim, full length waterproof zipper, drawcord adjustable hem, well-sized velcro cuff adjusters, and sleeves long enough to fully pull your hands inside to keep them out of rain/wind. Of note, the Visp does not have any pockets on the Jacket or Pants. Finally, while not inexpensive, the Visp costs significantly less than any sub 6 ounce waterproof breathable jacket we know of, and less than most jackets in the 6 ounce range.
Also new for 2020 is the matching 4 ounce 2020 Visp Rain Pants which share the same highly breathable Toyota fabric. Like the Visp Jacket they have roomy fit and good range of motion. Ankle zips allow for the pants to be put on over shoes, while allowing a slightly tapered leg for better fit.
BEST FOR: Experienced hikers and travelers looking for one of the lightest and most breathable rain jackets on the market. While not the cheapest jacket, it’s still a value for a jacket that is under 6 ounces.
NOTE: At just 9.4 ounces for a waterproof breathable jacket with pit zips and pants with ankle zips, the Visp Rain Jacket and Pants are the lightest on the market.

Zpacks Duplex Ultralight Two Person Tent
$599
STAFF PICK: Look no further than the Zpacks Duplex if you want the lightest full featured tent with an amazing volume to weight ratio. It is one of the very lightest 2 person tents on the market, yet it has all the creature comforts of a much heavier conventional tent — a full bathtub floor and mosquito netting, dual doors, dual vestibules, and interior storage pockets on both ends. Even with all these features it manages to achieve 35.8 ft2/lb. Impressive for just over a pound! And unlike many “tarptent” style shelters, the Duplex can be freestanding with an optional pole set.

Zpacks Plexamid Tent
$549
Weighing in at under a pound, the Plexamid is an ultralight and spacious tent designed to help take your hikes to the next level. Whether you’re on a thru-hike or just getting the most out of those two weeks away from the cubicle, this tent allows you to put in extra miles without wrecking your body.
The uniquely designed squared off peak gives this lightweight tent extra headroom while still allowing it to pitch easily with a single 48″ (122 cm) pole. The ultra-strong titanium peak structure remains in the tent while still allowing it to pack up small. The Plexamid is well-ventilated and can be set up in even the most cramped camp sites. You won’t find a lighter functional one-person tent anywhere.
Zpacks Classic Sleeping Bag 20F
$339
STAFF PICK: Zpacks Classic Sleeping Bag 20F has the 2nd highest warm to weight rating in this guide — but it has a zipper, while the other was a zipperless quilt — making this a significant achievement! What we really like about the Zpacks Classic Sleeping Bag is that it combines the best attributes of a quilt and a sleeping bag. It has the weight of a quilt and can be used unzippered, just like a quilt. But when it gets cold you can zip it up into a draft-free, sleeping bag mode. In normal Zpacks fashion, it uses the lightest material options – 950 fill power down and a lighter 7D nylon shell. Those materials come at a price making it more expensive than most camping quilts, but less expensive than most sleeping bags.
BEST FOR: Those who want one of the very lightest and warmest backcountry sleeping options And for hikers who like the flexibility of using it as both a quilt and a sleeping bag!

Zpacks Vertice Rain Jacket
$259
The Zpacks Vertice is one of the lightest and most breathable jackets. Its 3-layer construction has a fabric liner to protect the waterproof breathable membrane making it more suited for long term wear under a backpack vs. the 2 layer jackets. It’s also among the most fully featured jackets, with a large dual adjustment hood with stiffened brim, pit-zips, adjustable cuffs, a large chest pocket, & long protective hem.
See our Guide to the Best Lightweight Rain Jackets
The Vertice Rain Jacket is best for ultralighters looking for the lightest jacket that is super breathable. And, this jacket offers pit-zips with a 3-layer construction to protect the waterproof breathable membrane. Note that this one of the thinnest shell fabrics of any jacket (7 denier ripstop nylon). That being said, the fabric does not seem to be unduly delicate. We used Vertice Rainwear extensively in Patagonia with no failures. Adjustment hardware is also among the smallest and lightest, even among UL rain jackets.
ZPacks Wallet Zip Pouch
$9.95
Weighing just 0.22 oz (6.2 g), the ZPacks Wallet Zip Pouch is what we take on the trail and on international trips. Well, it’s actually my around town wallet too. The wallet is simple and thin so it doesn’t bulk up your pockets. It easily fits just about anywhere in your backpacking kit, but it’s also durable. [It’s made from 3.1 oz/sqyd Dyneema® Composite Fabric which can stand up to the abuse of being carried around. The colors are random and may be any of the Dyneema® Composite Fabric colors that Zpacks has in stock].
ZPacks Phone Zip Pouch & Phablet Zip Pouch
You might also like Zpacks Phone Zip Pouch and ZPacks Phablet Zip Pouch (for larger phones like iPhone 11 Max) if you need to fit a larger cell phone.

Economy Burrow Quilt
$180 +30F Wide-width
STAFF PICK: The Hammock Gear Burrow Quilt may well be the best deal on the market for getting a good night’s sleep in the backcountry. It blows most ultralight sleeping bags out of the water, costing 1/2 or less of a similarly rated down sleeping bag.
The Economy Burrow is a favorite of both hammock and ground campers around the world. Made with 20 denier nylon taffeta fabric that features a DWR (durable water resistant) coating to help shed moisture, and an internal calendared finish for down proof construction. Each quilt is generously filled with RDS Certified, 800 fill power, DWR treated duck down to provide insulation on the top and sides of your body, while eliminating flattened and otherwise ineffective insulation underneath. By forgoing the least insulating elements found in most sleeping bags such as a full length zipper, hood, and backside materials our top quilt design will keep you warm and save precious weight and space. Whether accompanied by a ground pad or underquilt, The Economy Burrow will keep you comfortably warm down to its temperature rating with any sleep system. When using The Economy Burrow in conjunction with any ground sleep system, upgrading to a wide width is highly recommended for adequate coverage along the sides of your body. Proudly made in the USA.

Premium Burrow Custom
$229
Over the years Hammock Gear and Enlightened Equipment have been going at it, neck-to-neck to make the best ultralight camping quilts. As such, Hammock Gear has a strong following among quilt proponents and for good reason. For years the Hammock Gear Premium Burrow Camping Quilt has one of the best weight to warmth and cost to warm value quilts on the market. And we find the baffling on the HG quilts to control down a bit better. But you really can’t go wrong with either the EE or HG quilts. Note: If you are wondering about using Hammock Gear Quilts for non-hammock sleep systems, don’t worry, their quilts aren’t just for hammock sleepers. Using the wider 55” option is recommended for those using their quilts without a hammock system.

WanderLust Hammock Kit
$229
We do much of our backpacking & camping in the east using a hammock tent. The Hammock Gear Wanderlust Complete Kit for Hammock Tent Camping raises the bar for an ultralight, low cost, easy to use, complete hammock kit. It is the least expensive, pro-quality hammock kit on the market. Not surprisingly it hits the sweet spot for price, ease of use, and low weight. It’s a hammock kit that will work for both beginner and expert hammock tent campers alike. The Hammock Gear Wanderlust is currently the only kit with the option to add on a down top and under-quilt at a serious discount.

Mariposa 60 Pack
$270
TOP PICK: For 10 years we’ve used some version of the award-winning Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 on many trips in the High Sierras, both on and off trail. For starters, it is a sub two pound, sixty liter, full featured pack. Those stats alone warrant your full attention. But numbers aside, it also sports some incredible features and construction. Best of all are the gigantic exterior pockets. Of all packs on this list, none have more external storage space, and we love the large hip-belt pockets. That’s in addition to its top zippered pocket; you’ll never go digging for knickknacks again. A signature feature is Gossamer Gear’s removable internal aluminum U frame plus a removable foam back that doubles as your camp sit-pad. This is key to how Gossamer reduces weight while retaining features. Despite its low weight, the Mariposa is quite comfortable and distributes weight well. Sewn with 100 and 200 denier Robic Nylon, it’s also built to last. We especially like the solid fabric on both the side pockets and bottom of the rear pocket reducing snagging and tears (when compared to mesh). Oh, and with it’s huge volume, it’s super Bear Canister friendly. Note that the pack has webbing loops for a compression sytem, but you’ll need to get some cordage and rig it yourself. In summary, this is a great ultralight pack, just ask its 187, five star average reviewers.
GREAT FOR: Hikers who utilize lots of external storage, want a fully featured pack, including a top lid pocket all for under 2 pounds!
See our Guide to: Best Backpacking Backpacks
Gorilla 50 Backpack
$180
Megaversatile, incredibly light, and insanely durable – this is the pack for you hardcore ultralight, plan-ahead thru hikers, and minimalist warriors. Features? This animal is loaded. You get a removable internal frame, external pockets – including that awesome big stretchy one on the back – quick-access fold over lid, durable and superlight custom fabrics, and a bunch of other stuff.
LT5 Trekking Poles
$195
The Gossamer Gear LT5 is a feather-light set of poles best for fast and efficient hiking on good trails. These poles are comfortable and light in your hands, with a stiff plant and a solid feel for extended backpacking or hiking. And they are great choices for using with your trekking pole support tent or other shelter like the new REI Flash Air Tents. Ultrarunners and fast-packers will like the low weight which means a light swing effort and easy and precise pole plants. Some caveats — we don’t recommend taking these into extreme off-trail terrain like talus, and be aware of potential breakage points at both the jointed segments and on the shaft itself under extreme stress or impact when off trail. And old-style collet (twist) adjusters are a bit more fiddly and time consuming to use than flip locks.

Hyperlite Mountain Gear Pack
$310
The HMG 2400 & 3400 Southwest Packs are a Staff Favorite and a Backpacker Magazine award winner for “Best UltraLight Pack.” HMG makes very light, functional and extremely durable packs that are virtually waterproof — no need for a rain cover! HMG packs have stiff frames that comfortably support even heavy loads. The slim profile gives great balance for scrambling or difficult trails. HMG packs are made with Dyneema Composite Fabric Fiber (formerly Cuben) which is light, waterproof and extremely durable. We prefer the 3400 Southwest Pack for it’s larger volume while weighing just a few oz more than the 2400.
Hyperlite Mountain Gear Pods
$50 to $60
Hyperlite Mountain Gear Pods sold out last year before the holiday sales! Use stackable Pods as a key organizational, space-saving, and weatherproofing tool. Pods fit perfectly into HMG (and likely other) packs leaving no volume unused. You can replace your unwieldy, football-shaped food bags and heavier stuff sacks. Ultralight Pods also allow you to organize your gear more efficiently, and the clamshell design makes it easy to find food quickly. Made of 100% waterproof Dyneema® Composite Fabric (formerly Cuben Fiber). With waterproof zippers, they help weatherproof your pack system.
Hyperlite Mountain Gear Stuff Sack Pillows
$37 to $47
Get a better night’s sleep in the backcountry with a Hyperlite Mountain Gear Stuff Sack Pillow. It has just the perfect pillow shape; and when you turn it inside out, there’s a nice nappy side to put your cheek on. Better yet, this does double duty as a waterproof stuff sack for your down jacket or puffy. We don’t leave home without it.
Hyperlite Mountain Gear Versa Fanny Pack
$70
The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Versa Fanny Pack is a Jill-of-all-trades. Hyperlite Mountain Gear says the Versa Fanny Pack is for “Outdoor athletes who want a durable, weatherproof, flexible accessory pack for hiking, backpacking, packrafting, fishing, biking, trail running, travel, or errands around town.” We see the Versa as a great option to make key gear quickly accessible on the trail without having to take your pack off or fumble in awkward pack side pockets. We found it especially useful for storing all our photography and video gear while giving us nearly instantaneous access while providing rain and dust protection. It was equally useful to hold all our valuables – wallet, electronics, camera, phone, USB battery, and charging gear – in one place. And, of course, it makes a great catchall for the day’s trail food, maps, guide book, sunscreen, lip balm, Iphone, and anything else that you want to quickly grab while walking. Finally, it makes an excellent small fanny pack for minimal day hikes. See our review “Hyperlite Mountain Gear Versa Fanny Pack | First Look”
Outdoor Research Interstellar Jacket
$299
The best UL technical jacket — from backpacking all the way to mountaineering and climbing.
FEATURES: The Outdoor Research Interstellar Jacket is a close competitor with the Montbell Storm Cruiser — they’re close in price, weight, feature set. What makes the Interstellar unique is its high breathability (30,000 g/m2/24h!) AscentShell fabric which also has stretch and a super nice feel. The Interstellar has one mesh chest pocket (iphone, gps, etc) and two deep mesh hand pockets that can serve as vents. It also has a large, dual drawcord, stiffened brim hood; tough toothed zipper, and velcro cuffs. The Interstellar also has great range of motion in the shoulder area making it well suited for climbing as well as backpacking . This is one of our very favorite jackets for dealing with long trips in wet climates!
BEST FOR: Anyone looking for tough, highly breathable, full-featured rain that works equally well for hiking, backpacking or climbing. Note that the Interstellar does not have pit-zips, altho its fabric breathability makes these less essential, and the hand pockets can be used to vent.
