Katadyn BeFree AC Review 2025
Last Updated: February 6, 2025
Analyzing the 2025 Katadyn BeFree AC, Still Best-in-class For Hikers
Great structural improvements but unimpressed by activated carbon which decreases flow rate
The new-for-2025 Katadyn BeFree AC is the latest edition of the design that popularized soft flask squeeze filters. “AC” refers to the addition of a removable, activated carbon secondary filter that claims to improve taste but definitely reduces flow rate. Compared to the original, its AC filter isn’t a major upgrade, but the improved cap and narrower body are. At time of publication, Katadyn BeFree AC remains the best overall soft flask squeeze filter for hiking and backpacking, but other options are viable and well-worth considering.

Katadyn BeFree AC Water Filter 2025 Construction & Features
The Katadyn BeFree AC is a soft flask squeeze filter designed for backcountry water purification, and our overview will go from bottom to top, starting with the HydraPak-branded soft flask made with TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane). This material is both malleable and durable, collapsing to reduce bulk as you drink out of it. Drawbacks include susceptibility to sharp object puncturing when full, and the fact that it imparts a plastic-y taste on the water (which fades over time). The flask is heat-bonded, and made of a stiffened, reinforced plastic at the head with a 42mm threaded opening.
The primary filter, which is sunken into the flask, is made of hollow fiber strands in a protective plastic casing. It filters out most of the worrisome contaminates one might encounter in the backcountry. Katadyn BeFree AC has a very fast flow rate when new, that reduces to about half by the mid-point of its life as the filter takes on particles of sand, dirt, algae, etc. While larger chunks can be dislodged by the swish and shake cleaning method, it will never recover its original flow rate.
The neck of the filter features a large, hard plastic clip attachment point to secure the unit with a carabiner or strand of cord. In our professional opinion, it is a bit larger than necessary. Unscrew the top cap mechanism to easily add or remove its activated carbon filter, which is designed to improve taste, including removal of the TPU taste.
It features a silicone mouth piece and top cap made of sturdy plastic with a metal hinge. This is a major improvement over the original, whose top cap was prone to cracking or breaking off entirely.
The Activated Carbon Filter
Does Katadyn BeFree AC’s activated carbon filter decrease flow rate?
Yes, Katadyn BeFree AC’s activated carbon filter reduces the flow rate of the system by forcing the water through more material. When both filter units are new, the activated carbon component reduces flow rate by approximately half. However, once the flow rate of the primary hollow fiber filter takes on dirt, sand, and other particles with backcountry use and decreases to an approximate mid-life steady state, the amount in which the activated carbon filter decreases flow rate will likely become less perceptible.
Do you have to use the activated carbon filter?
No, the activated carbon filter can be added or removed easily by unscrewing the cap and pulling it out. When dry, it is virtually weightless. If you’re worried about taste, you should use it. If you’re worried about flow rate, you should not use it. All in all, it’s not a big deal.
Does the activated carbon filter remove the plastic TPU taste?
Yes, the activated carbon filter decreases the plastic taste of the TPU material. It can also absorb other common bad tastes and discolorations found in the backcountry, such as sulfur and tannins.
How does activated carbon filtration work?
Activated carbon is a porous material, made from carbon-rich organic materials like wood, coconut shells, and coal, that can be used to filter water. “Activation” refers to the process in which millions of tiny pours are created. Contaminates bind to the surface of the activated carbon. Some contaminates, like chlorine, react chemically and are neutralized.
Which Size and Color To Choose
First Choice: Katadyn BeFree AC 0.5L
The half liter version of Katadyn BeFree AC is by far the best. That’s because, unlike it’s 1L-sized peers, it can easily be front-mounted into shoulder strap and running vest pockets. Front-mounting a soft bottle filter is the most efficient way to hydrate in the backcountry because it minimizes the steps required to filter and drink. By front-mounting, you don’t need to take your pack off or reach backwards awkwardly; your bottle is right there and can be grabbed in a split second. Stopping to drink by filtering directly into your mouth from a front-mounted soft bottle is so fast and efficient that, in water rich environments, you barely need to carry any spare water at all.
Second Choice: Katadyn BeFree AC 1.0L – Black Edition
Katadyn BeFree AC 1.0L Black Edition is our second favorite model. We dislike the size, which is too large to be front-mounted, but appreciate the durability boost of the double layer TPU body. Because the Black Edition is much more puncture resistant but only a fraction of an ounce (.3 oz) heavier, we think it is clearly superior to the blue 1L sized BeFree AC, so long as you don’t mind forking over an extra $10. However, both 1L sized versions must be stored in side pockets, which competes with the even more durable/reliable Sawyer Squeeze.
Third Choice: Katadyn BeFree AC 1.0L
The 1L sized version of Katadyn BeFree AC, despite likely being the best seller overall, is our least favorite model of the three. It is too large and clunky to front mount, which automatically makes it worse than the .5L version. It is less durable, but only .3 oz lighter weight than the 1L Black Edition, which seems almost strictly better. Because the 1L size cannot be front mounted and must be side pocketed, it competes with other styles of filtration, like Sawyer Squeeze, which last longer and are also more durable, outcompeting the BeFree AC 1L,

Katadyn BeFree AC vs HydraPak UltraFlask + Filter Cap
In this section, we compare relative pros and cons of Katadyn BeFree AC to the HydraPak UltraFlask + Filter Cap. To generalize, the Katadyn BeFree AC is better for hikers and backpackers because it is better for filtering into other vessels and more spill proof, ergo it can be stored inside of a pack, not just front mounted. On the other hand, HydraPak is better for runners, since its narrower chassis fits better into vest pockets, and its bite valve is faster to drink from on the go. See more in our guide to the best soft flask squeeze filters.
Relative Advantages of Katadyn BeFree AC vs HydraPak UltraFlask + Filter Cap

2025 Katadyn BeFree AC Review Conclusion
The latest version of Katadyn BeFree is an improvement over the original thanks to a more durable top cap and slightly narrower body which front-mounts better in running vests and shoulder strap pockets. The activated carbon filter is a nice option to have, but we expect to use it sans-AC more often than not because it decreases flow rate. Within the genre of soft flask squeeze filters, which Katadyn invented, BeFree remains the best option for hikers because it front mounts well, unlike LifeStraw Peak Sqyeeze, AND is spill-proof no matter where you store it, unlike HydraPak UltraFlask + Filter Cap. Happy hydrating!
