REI Co-op Trailmade 60 Backpack Review

Best Backpacking Pack for Under $150 | Beginner friendly!

We want everyone to have access to backpacking, which is why we recommend the REI Trailmade 60 backpack (shop now). Costing only $150, it’s the most affordable option on our list, and the least expensive legit backpacking backpack from a mainstream outdoor brand. And we strongly approve of REI’s inclusive sizing, helping more body types fit into backpacking gear, including plus sizes up to 4X.

Features

To be honest, there is nothing special or fancy about the REI Trailmade 60 backpack. The materials are simple, the design is old school, but they have miraculously kept the weight to a medium-duty 54 oz. We know some very popular backpacks that cost more than twice as much as the Trailmade that are a full pound heavier (cough Osprey Atmos cough)

As far features go, there are plenty of external pockets, including a hip belt pockets, a large back panel and side pockets where the hip belt meets the frame. This orients water bottles slightly forward and makes them easier to reach.

We can tell this pack will last a while, thanks to heavy duty hardware. We love big, fail-safe buckles. We don’t love the bottom entry sleeping bag compartment; to us it just adds weight, cost, and an additional potential failure point.

This backpack is constructed with recycled materials, and REI has not skimped on sustainability. In a nod to beginner backpackers, adjustment instructions are printed directly onto the underside of the lid.

Verdict

All in all, we’re super impressed by how good this backpacking backpack is for only $149. The REI Trailmade 60 isn’t fancy, but it would have been top tier 20 years ago and it’s still good today. This pack is a perfect entry point into the backpacking life.
