The Most Breathable Mesh Running Caps
A marketplace analysis highlighting top performers based on five objective criteria
Ditch that clunky trucker, the best running caps are those built with strategically placed, light colored mesh fabrics panels, thereby creating an optimal blend of breathability and sun protection. To inform this buyer’s guide, we have identified five key criteria on which to evaluate mesh caps. Any model that meets all five, and fits your head well, is likely an exceptional option.
5 Criteria Make The Best Running Caps
- Light colored fabric
- UV protection top
- Hyper breathable sides
- Unstructured front panel
- Crushable brim
Criteria overview: (1) lighter colors absorb less heat; (2) top panel is most sun exposed, must balance UV protection and breathability (3) side panels are less sun exposed, should be optimized for breathability; (4) unstructured front panels are thinner, cooler, and more aero dynamics; (5) crushable brims pack away easily.

TIER 1 RUNNING CAPS
Defined by use of hybrid-mapped fabric panels; sun protection on top, hyper breathable mesh on the sides.
Path Projects Saguaro
The Path Proejcts Saguaro is our current editor’s choice pick thanks to its optimally hybrid-mapped layout and extra wide brim for extra face protection. It meets or exceeds all of our criteria.
- Price: $38
- Fit Notes: Adequately deep for larger heads.
- Pros: Hybrid-mapped. Hyper breathable side panels. Reasonably breathable top. Solid Velcro closure back. Extra wide brim.
- Cons: Not UPF rated. Rough texture on side mesh.
Outdoor Research Swift Air
The award for most breathable side panels goes to Outdoor Research Swift Air!
- Price: $32
- Fit Notes: Adequately deep for larger heads.
- Pros: Hybrid-mapped. Maximum breathability side panels. UPF 40 top panel.
- Cons: Mediocre breathability on top panel.
Skida Packable Running Cap
Optimal hybrid-mapped fabric layout, with a thin and breathable top mesh, and fun prints define the Skida packable running cap. Plus, it’s an independent, women-owned brand! Our biggest concern is that the UPF-rating of the top panel is exaggerated. If it’s actually UPF 50, it’s the thinnest, most open mesh we’ve ever seen score that high. Notably, it’s half the thickness of the rnnr distance, which only boasts a UPF rating of 40.
- Price: $42
- Fit Notes: Slightly shallow depth, prefers medium to small head
- Pros: Hybrid mapped. UPF 50 top mesh is surprisingly thin and breathable. Hyper breathable side mesh. Fun prints.
- Cons: Expensive. Is that top fabric really UPF 50?
rnnr Distance Cap
The rnnr Distance cap is a great example of tier-1 hybrid mapped design – open mesh sides, and a UPF-rated upper. What’s more, it comes in fun colorways and two sizes for all head shapes. While the top mesh fabric look like all the rest, it has a backer material that increases thickness and decreases breathability.
- Price: $40
- Fit Notes: Available in medium and large! Choose your fit. The larger size is quite large around the crown.
- Pros: Hybrid mapped. UPF 40 top mesh. Hyper breathable side mesh.
- Cons: Expensive. Top panel is thicker than it looks.
Fractel M-Cap, Freshwater
Out of 18 colorways for the Fractel M-cap, the Freshwater limited edition version is the only hybrid-mapped design with open mesh side panels. All other versions of the M-cap feature the same mesh on both top and sides; they’re still good, but we consider those to be tier-2 options.
- Price: $45
- Fit Notes: Shallow depth prefers medium or smaller heads. See F-series and E-series for even smaller heads.
- Pros: Hybrid-mapped. Breathable top panel. High breathability side panel. Great look. UPF 30 rated.
- Cons: Expensive. Least breathable side panel mesh among tier 1 caps.
Bambu Werx Lightweight Running Caps
Bambu Werx Lightweight Running Cap is the only properly hybrid-mapped design to be made with a plant-viscose-based fabric! Not only is it more sustainable, this is advantageous because the bamboo sweatband is naturally antimicrobial, and may reduce itching or odor.
- Price: $30
- Fit notes: Medium.
- Pros: Hybrid mapped. Plant-based fiber is antimicrobial. Good price.
- Cons: Plant based fiber is slower drying.
TIER 2 RUNNING CAPS
Defined by great caps whose only flaw is that they use the same mesh fabric throughout, instead of hybrid-mapping.
Ciele GOcap Comp
The FLEXweave mesh fabric used throughout Ciele GOcap Comp proved more breathable in testing than any other UPF-rated alternative, and is a best-in-class textile for use on a running cap’s top panels. However, GOcap does not take advantage of hybrid mapping to optimize side panel air flow, hence the tier-2 rating.
- Price: $50
- Fit Notes: Three sizes: S/M, M/L, L/XL
- Pros: Most breathable mesh upper. Good size range.
- Cons: Not hybrid-mapped. Side panels could be more breathable. Expensive.
Ciele FSTcap Comp
For a shallower crown that is better suited to smaller heads, choose the Ciele FSTcap Comp over the aforementioned GOcap Comp. Otherwise, they’re built with the same fabrics and overall design.
- Price: $55
- Fit Notes: Two sizes: S/M & M/L. Shallow crown depth prefers medium-to-small heads even with M/L size. Larger heads choose GOcap instead.
- Pros: Most breathable mesh upper. Size range. Easy to use closure mechanism.
- Cons: Not hybrid-mapped. Side panels could be more breathable. Very expensive. Questionable UV protection on top panel.
Territory Run Co. Long Haul
No mesh running cap was more frequently complimented during testing than the Territory Run Co. Long Haul. This is a superb running cap for small to medium sized heads, held back from true greatness only because the side panels could have been more breathable.
- Price: $39
- Fit Notes: Shallow crown prefers medium or small heads
- Pros: Breathable mesh on top. Great looking, most-compliments.
- Cons: Not hybrid-mapped, could have more breathable side panels.
Decathlon Kiprun
Dunno what Kiprun means, but this mesh cap is a high performer for a reasonable price; nearly identical to the Territory Run Co for $15 less. Big heads look elsewhere; it runs shallow.
- Price: $25
- Fit Notes: Shallow crown prefers medium or small heads
- Pros: Breathable mesh throughout. Good price.
- Cons: Not hybrid-mapped, should have more breathable side panels. Not UPF-rated
TIER 3 RUNNING CAPS
Defined by lack of hybrid-mapping, and use of laser-perforated fabric which is less breathable than traditional mesh.
Strafe Banger Touring Cap
Laser perforated woven fabric is less air-permeable than traditional knit mesh. However, the Strafe Banger Touring Cap is a particularly good implementation of this textile tech, with more vent holes per square foot of fabric than others like it. All that, and it still gets a UPF 30 rating.
- Price: $50
- Fit Notes: Adequate for larger heads.
- Pros: UPF 30 rated. Durable. More laser perforations per sq ft than similar fabrics.
- Cons: Not hybrid mapped. Side panels should be more breathable. Laser perforated fabric is less breathable than true mesh.
Sprints HyperG Racing Cap
Sprints HyperG running caps are notable for their fun print designs, but the laser perforated woven polyester is less breathable than traditional knit mesh. For that reason, and the fact that they aren’t hybrid-mapped and the brim is not crushable, we list them in tier-3.
- Price: $38
- Fit Notes: Medium
- Pros: Great prints and colorways. Good elastic closure mechanism. Durable. UPF 45 (noted on tag).
- Cons: Not hybrid mapped. Laser perforated fabric is less breathable than true mesh. Non-crushable brim. Side panels should be more breathable.
Expanding on the 5 criteria
Light colored fabric
We know that color and print preferences are deeply personal, but we cannot stress enough how important it is to choose a light color. Dark green, navy, charcoal, and God-forbid black absorb significantly more heat when exposed to direct sun, baking your noggin and degrading athletic performance. Choose a light or white color and enjoy a cooler head.
UV Protection Top Panel
If you want max breathability without protecting the top of your head from UV, choose a visor. This is applicable to anyone with thick hair, or if you always wear a sun hoodie over your cap. But for those of us who require scalp protection, you need a cap that blocks UV. Hyper breathable mesh is a great material for side panels, but let’s in too much UV for top panel placement. The best mesh running caps feature a UPF 30+ rated top panel to quantifiable guarantee the protection you need and zero sun burns.
Hyper Breathable Side Panel
Unlike the top panel, which protects against the brunt of sun exposure, you can get away with non-UV-protective open mesh side panels, and doing so is highly recommended to increase convective cooling air flow. This hybrid fabric approach sacrifices some sun protection to increase ventilation, and is recommended to anyone with hair, and in most situations and at most altitudes. Use your best judgement, caveats apply.
Unstructured Front Panels
It’s important to choose a cap with an unstructured fabric front panel, as opposed to the structure of a trucker hat. The materials used to stiffen the front of a trucker cap are always hotter and less breathable than unstructured fabrics, and thus the an unstructured running cap will help keep your head cooler. Most commonly, you will find a solid fabric used up front, as these fabrics are more durable than mesh to bind the brim and accommodate branding.
Crushable Brim
Not that we recommend you crush your brim, but this is a valuable characteristic because moderately stiff brims interact better with unstructured front panels. And for the sake of storing in a running vest/pack, the ability to fold or collapse a brim is useful.
Laser perforated fabric is okay, but less breathable than traditional mesh
Mesh Running Caps Conclusion
The best running caps protect your head from the sun while also keeping it cool. They achieve this via a combination of light colored, sun-protective top fabric and airy mesh side panels. Beyond that, just make sure to avoid dark colors and structured front panel trucker caps; the former absorbs heat, and the latter retains it. Happy trails!
