ULA Equipment Flow
ULA redesigned their Flow water bottle holders for 2025, and it’s a big improvement. The old version was slightly too narrow, and the new version is wider and easier to slide bottles in and out of. These utilize durable, static diver mesh to achieve a sub 1-oz weight, and secure to any daisy chain with easy-to-use G-hooks. There is no perpendicular slider, so you can easily mount and dismount them without unhooking the shoulder straps from the frame of your pack. The top rim has a shock cord cinching mechanism, but is not stiffened. While it is sufficiently wide, it can be prone to collapse while you put a bottle in one-handed.

This one is more of a pocket and less of a narrow Smartwater sized sleeve, which better accommodates a soft bottle’s girth. The stretch mesh seems durable enough, albeit less so than static mesh. Its cinchable top keeps your soft bottle in place.

HydraPak PackFlask 500 & 750ml
Choose the HydraPak PackFlask because it is the only model we know of that attaches directly to backpack shoulder straps without daisy chain loops, and can even mount to a sternum strap. Instead of G-hooks, it uses a pair of Velcro bands that wrap around the shoulder straps. As such, it will work with Osprey packs, or basically any model with volumized shoulder straps. The drawback to this design is that there is no hard vertical stop to prevent the sleeve from gradually drifting down. The good news is that the Velcro bands seem to create enough pressure to keep it in place, barring an aggressive tug. Another drawback is that the opening is not stiffened, so it can be difficult to set the bottle back into the sleeve one handed. Notable, this stretch mesh sleeve comes with a complimentary bit valve soft flask with which it was designed to be paired, and is available in three versions: a 500ml, a 750ml and a 750ml with filter (PackFlask+). Because the 750ml is a bit too wide, we recommend the 500ml size and buying a filter separately; sadly the + version is only for available with 750ml.

Double check how your water bottle holder will connect to your pack
Before making a purchase, it’s imperative that you double check attachment compatibility by visually inspecting the configuration of your intended backpack’s shoulder straps. Never assume there will be a match! Does your pack have daisy chains, webbing straps, or other styles of attachment point? How will your desired water bottle sleeve connect? Does the manufacturer lists brands they are known to be compatible with?
Which exact hydration vessel will you be storing in your water bottle sleeve?
Smartwater 1L, .7L, 5L, CNOC Vesica, Nalgene, Gatorade, Katadyn BeFree .6L, HydraPak .5L, or something else entirely? We recommend starting with your preferred vessel, and then pairing it with a water bottle carrier, rather than vice versa. Notably, not all body types can easily accommodate shoulder strap mounting a 1L bottle. Doing so may work well for longer torsos, but shorter people may find them awkward, and should likely stick to smaller bottles, such as Smartwater .5 or .7L.

Why do you say that the hyperlite bottle pocket is both less and more durable in comparison to static mesh? Thank you for your time, happy trails!
Hi! Great question! I know that sounds weird, but there is a reason. In general, stretch mesh is less durable than static mesh because it is more likely to rip once snagged, and more likely to tear from abrasion. However, this sleeve is made with Dyneema stretch mesh, which is reinforced with UHMWPE threads that make it a much stronger than the average implementation of stretch mesh.
I have an Osprey Exos 55 pro, but Osprey packs do not have daisy chains. Any idea what brand water bottle pocket will work with Osprey packs? Thanks

Good review. I find carrying a water bottle on my shoulder tends to make it really sore. I also normally only carry one water bottle. A gear storage pocket is on the other. Is the offset of weight causing the pain or…??? Should I carry two water bottles…or none at all? Thoughts? Thanks!
Thanks! Probably not the offset-ness of the weight specifically causing discomfort, perhaps the hard-sided nature of bottles pressing against you, or just the added weight of 1-2lbs of water. In that case, I’d recommend front mounting a Katadyn BeFree .6L – which is my preferred method. If you hike in areas with frequent water source access, it allows you to carry very little water on-body (potentially alleviating shoulder discomfort), since you can efficiently pull it out to drink as-needed at each stream crossing, and move on without having to filter water from one bottle to the another, wait for chemicals or gravity, or even take your pack off as all. It’s so easy to filter and drink that frequent stops slow you down less than the combination of longer filtering breaks + added weight of carrying more water (because less frequent fill ups).
One other thought though, if you carry a bottle in on of your side pocket, make sure it’s not the same side as your front bottle pocket to spread the weight more evenly.
