Features & Construction

The Enlightened Equipment Outcast Jacket is insulated with CLIMASHIELD APEX, a synthetic loft that performs well-above average in terms of breathability, quick-dry, warmth-to-weight, and warmth-when wet. It is an exceptional material for the job, and we prefer it over similar offerings from the more ubiquitous PrimaLoft. Compared to the average sweater-weight puffy, it’s bit loftier and more insulated.

The 2oz sq/yd batting is encased in a 30d nylon exterior, and 20d nylon inner shell. This level of durability is up to all purpose wear and tear. Go ahead and take it to the crag, on an international trip, play with your dog, throw in the back of the car, on errands, and even around the house in winter. No big deal.

For additional comfort and range of motion by way of added-stretch, the Outcast features two large panels of Polartec fleece running from arm pit to hem, approximately 8″ in width. While this sacrifices some warmth-to-weight, it significantly increases mobility and comfort. The hard-faced fleece is also wind resistant, and quite warm on its own.

We turn next to its fit and features, which include a full length YKK zipper, zippered hand pockets, an adjustable hood (or standup collar if you opt for the hoodless model), fleece stretch panels (see above) and soft/stretchy sleeve material. EE describes the fit as athletic. While it’s perhaps a bit slim, we would call it very much true-to-size with room for a fleece underneath. No need to size up or down from your regular, but if you’re in between, size up.

Choosing between Torrid vs Outcast

You might be choosing between Enlightened Equipment’s other puffy jacket, the Torrid, and wondering what the differences are and which is right for you. We give the following breakdown. For more info, read our full-length Enlightened Equipment Torrid Jacket Review.

Purpose

  • Torrid is better for hiking and backpacking because it’s much lighter
  • Outcast is still good for hiking and backpacking, but better for everything else

Weight

  • M’s Medium Outcast weighs 13.2 oz, W’s 12.0 oz
  • A men’s medium Torrid weighs 8.6 oz, W’s 7.5

Price

  • Outcast costs $240
  • Torrid costs $185

Fabric

  • Outcast is built with a 30d nylon shell and 20d nylon liner
  • Torrid is built with a 10d nylon

Movement

  • Torrid is static
  • Outcast has stretch thanks to the fleece side panels (which also makes it more breathable)

Looks

  • Torrid’s thin shell fabric and unbaffled aesthetic looks strange away from the trail
  • Outcast looks great wherever you wear it

Weather-Resistance

  • Both jackets are DWR treated and have wind resistant properties thanks to their nylon shell fabrics.

Warmth

  • Both jackets are insulated with the same 2 oz sq/yd CLIMASHIELD APEX and are roughly equal in terms of warmth. However, Torrid does not exchange synthetic loft for fleece side panels, and as such, it would feel marginally warmer.
