Features & Construction
The Patagonia R1 Air is far lighter than your average fleece, and the lighter end of the midweight fleece spectrum – which we classify as 10-16oz. R1 Air is manufactured with 100% recycled 162 g/m2 fleece fabric. Its zigzagging knit pattern is designed to boost breathability in a similar way to how grid fleece functions. We like how the zigzag valleys create less empty space than square grid fleece. This boosts breathability significantly with only a minimal hit to its insulative ability. The inside surface of the fleece is flatter and less textured than the outside.
The hollow core yarns have a high warmth-to-weight ratio, adding thickness and insulation without weight. This reminds us of Octa yarn, another fabric technology that increases warmth-to-weight by creating an air-trapping property inside each strand.
Stretch and wicking? Definitely! R1 Air is a superb moisture wicker pulling, sweat off your base layer or skin and evaporating off the surface. It’s fairly stretchy too, though probably more average than exceptional in that regard.
Whether you chose the pullover or the hoody, the R1 Air is feature light. You get one chest one chest pocket no matter what. The hoody has zippered hand pockets, and the hood fits under, rather than over, climbing helmets.

Patagonia R1 Air Review Verdict
Patagonia R1 Air is supremely comfortable, warm, and breathable. It is a great all purpose fleece that is responsibly designed. It’s a bit heavier than we prefer, but pays it back with added warmth.
