We like modal fabric because of how darn soft, breathable, and comfortable it is. The hand feel is more like cotton, however, it’s performance is somewhere in between cotton and polyester.

The Tropic Comfort Natural Hoody won’t dry quite as quickly as thinner polyester or nylon fabrics, which is perhaps the biggest downside. We would not recommend this as a cool weather base layer, as you could get chilled by sweat. That said, this hiking shirt should be completely sufficient for most 3-season use.

Modal also offers less UV protection for its fabric weight, which is why this one had to be a bit heavier, 9.3 oz (compared to 7.2 for the REI Sahara Shade), to score a UPF rating of 40.

As far as features, we like how the hood can be closed up around your face with a button toggle, rather than a cinch. That’s innovative, and saves material weight.
