Smartwool Classic All-Season Merino Quarter Zip Review

Smartwool All-season Qaurter Zip Merino Pullover

The perfect quarter-zip base layer for cool-weather hiking

For cool weather hiking, especially in shoulder season, we prefer the Smartwool Classic All-Season Merino Quarter Zip.

  • Price: $95
  • Weight: 6.8 oz
  • UPF: Unrated
  • Fabric: 88% Merino, 12% Nylon
  • Pros: Merino wool. Warm and breathable. Quick drying. Antimicrobial. Vents.
  • Cons: Not UPF rated. Too warm for summer.

Construction & Features

This is a 150 weight base layer that derives performance benefit from an 88% merino, 12% nylon fabric blend. Specifically, its yarn is created by wrapping merino strands over a recycled nylon core. This keeps the merino next to skin for maximum comfort, while the nylon increases durability and moisture wicking.

Unlike sun hoodies, the Smartwool Classic provides light insulation on its own, which is why we prefer a quarter zip chassis. This allows for mechanical ventilation if you start to overheat. Speaking of insulation, we have specifically chosen a lighter weight merino base layer, as opposed to the 250 weight thermal version of this shirt that is really only viable in temps below freezing. Merino wool is naturally antimicrobial, which helps keep the shirt fresher after days of use.

Note, this shirt does not have a UPF rating, but all shirts block some amount of UV, even if natural fibers are less effective. Therefore, we would conservatively ball park this at UPF 10+, but that’s just an estimate.

Verdict

Smartwool Classic All Season Merino Quarter Zip is our go-to base layer hiking shirt for cool weather, and the perfect blend of insulation, comfort, and breathability. We highly recommend it for shoulder season!
