Construction & Features

The Stio Goodwin Shorts are built with “ReGuster Crinkled Nylon Oversized Ripstop, 55% recycled.” Which is a fancy way of saying they’re made of ripstop nylon, and that means excellent durability and exceptional quick dry properties, at the expense of zero stretch by design. The more elastane-derived stretch a fabric has, the slower it is to dry. So it’s always a give and take. As these were designed primarily for use on the water (though of course they can be worn anywhere), we agree with the choice to use 100% nylon.

We would definitely describe the fit of these shorts as baggy, which is ideal considering they have no stretch. They’re easy to move and sit in, and look trendy. No complaints from us!

Two drop-in, trouser-cut hand pockets adorn the sides. They are mesh-lined and roughly average size and depth. Because of the trouser cut, and the fact that they aren’t extra deep nor are they zipper secured, it is possible for items to fall out whenever the pockets shift into a horizontal position. As such, we don’t recommend the Goodwins for serious adventure or scenarios where they could become inverted. However, they are perfect for low key to moderate adventure!

A single zippered rear pocket completes the storage suite, but it is oddly small, too small even to comfortably carry a wallet. We’ve used it for odds and ends, but generally find it be sub par.

The waistband is elastic and supplemented with a built-in belt made with nylon webbing and plastic clasping hardware. We generally dislike internal belts, but this is arguably the best we’ve ever used. It opens/closes securely, and is comfortable, functional, and easy to use. The fly too is functional, built with hook-and-loop closure, rather than zipper or snap.

Stio Goodwin Shorts Review Verdict

All-in-all, the Stio Goodwin Shorts are an exceptional pair of baggy board shorts, ready for adventure, travel, summer vacation, and use on the water. From fabric to fit to waistband, we agree with nearly all of the design choices, aside from the pockets, which are just okay. Nonetheless, it’s hard not to love these shorts and we do recommend them.
